Hot Month for Tonka Tackle!

It’s not just the July weather that’s hot.  Tonka Tackle Pro-Staff anglers continued their hot streak this past weekend, with 2 wins, and a 3rd place finish.

Medicine Lake

To kick things off, Carl Spande had a Lakes Area Bassmasters club tournament on Medicine Lake.

While most of the rest of his club beat the banks, Carl chose to concentrate his efforts on the plentiful structure on the deeper parts of the lake.

Carl enticed most of his fish on a drop shot rig, with a TT Dead Stick rigged wacky style.  Presentation was key, Carl said, as the less he moved the bait, the better the fish bit.

By doing something different than the rest of his club, he netted a 16 pound, 5 fish limit, more than enough for the win.

1st Place Medicine Lake - 16lbs

The Very Next Day…

Aaron Perrault and his dad would work a similar patter on their way to a 5 fish/16.27lb limit, good for a 3rd place finish in their Central MN BAss League event.  Aaron and his Dad are now in 2nd place in the overall points race, just 2 points behind the leaders.  2 tournaments remain on Platt/Sullivan and Knife Lake.

Lake Waconia

On Sunday July 15th, Tom Harkman competed in the 3rd Metro Hawg Hunters club tournament of the season.

A week prior to the tournament, Tom had located several areas that were holding quality fish.  All week he could only hope those fish had stayed in the area.

1st Place Lake Waconia - 19.04lbsTom and his partner relied on Jigworms, and TT Tube Jigs in the morning hours to intercept the actively feeding bass.  By 10am, the action slowed considerably, at which point they went in search of upgrades to their limit.

Past Noon, a southerly breeze began to blow, breaking up the hot slack water, and they decided to spend the last 90 minutes on the honey hole in search of one last quality bite.

After whiffing on a few bites, Tom had found that if he pitched a Black/Blue Craw to the outer weeds, and just shook it as it hung up on the stems, that it would atract a bite as it popped off the weed.

With the clock ticking down towards weigh-in the method paid off in a big way, with Tom landing their big bass of the day, a 4.65 lb largmeouth.

It turned out they would need this kicker fish to win, as it vaulted their bag up to19.04lbs, just enough to edge out 2 other teams in the mid 18lb range.
